China’s Sinopec in Qingdao LNG terminal milestone

China’s state-controlled energy giant Sinopec said its Qingdao LNG import terminal in Shandong province has recently received its 500th cargo since it started operations in 2014.

The 174,000-cbm Cesi Wenzhou delivered the milestone shipment on April 21, according to a Sinopec statement.

This 2018-built vessel transports LNG for Sinopec from the Australia Pacific LNG export plant on Curtis Island, near Gladstone.

Sinopec said the Qingdao terminal has received more than 35 million tonnes of LNG since 2014, delivering over 35 billion cubic meters of natural gas to the market.

Last month, the terminal also welcomed the first shipment from Qatar, as part of Sinopec’s long-term deal with QatarEnergy.

To remind, Sinopec completed the terminal’s second expansion phase in August last year. The firm added two new 160,000-cbm LNG storage tanks, boosting the terminal’s yearly handling capacity to 7 mtpa.

The state-owned firm is also working on the third expansion phase of the terminal which it aims to complete in 2023.

This phase would increase the plant’s capacity to 14 mtpa, making it the largest in China, Sinopec previously said.
