Deutsche ReGas to slash Mukran LNG emissions

German LNG terminal operator Deutsche ReGas has joined forces with Finland-based steel producer Outokumpu to reduce emissions at its FSRU-based LNG import terminal in Mukran.

According to a Deutsche ReGas statement, the two firms signed a memorandum of understanding on the utilization of industrial process heat and electricity for decarbonizing their process technologies.

The process heat and electricity will be sourced from a new biocarbon plant that Outokumpu plans to operate in the Mukran port.

Deutsche ReGas said the collaboration would “significantly” increase the energy efficiency of both the “Deutsche Ostsee” LNG terminal and Outokumpu’s biocarbon plant.

In December 2024, Outokumpu announced plans to produce 15,000 tonnes of
biocarbon per year, using waste wood biomass, for further delivery to its Tornio biocoke agglomeration plant – a new facility at the grounds of Outokumpu’s fully integrated stainless steel mill in Finland.

The Outokumpu EvoCarbon factory in Mukran is expected to ramp up its initial biocarbon production during summer 2026, while subsequent delivery of process heat for local consumption by Deutsche ReGas and the municipality of Sassnitz will follow upon completion of the factory processes.

“Following Outokumpu’s decision to choose Mukran Port as its location, this collaboration is the logical next move for our companies,” said Ingo Wagner, CEO of Deutsche ReGas.

“The process heat will allow us to cover a significant amount of our energy needs. The intended cooperation highlights our commitment to decarbonizing our terminal and reducing
operational costs for our customers,” he said.

The Mukran LNG terminal currently consists of the 2009-built 145,000-cbm, FSRU Neptune, after Deutsche ReGas terminated the charter contract for the 174,000-cbm FSRU Energos Power with the German government.

However, Deutsche Regas plans to reinstall a second FSRU at the facility.
