First Coral FLNG cargo on way to Spain’s Bilbao terminal

The first cargo produced at Eni’s 3.4 mtpa Coral Sul (Coral South) FLNG in Mozambique is heading towards the Bilbao LNG terminal in Spain, according to port data.

Data for incoming vessels posted by the Bilbao port authority on its website shows that the 2019-built 173,400-cbm, British Sponsor, owned by Kmarin and chartered by BP, is expected to arrive in the port on December 7.

However, the vessel may change its destination in the meantime.

Bahia de Bizkaia Gas (BBG) is the owner of the LNG import terminal in the port of Bilbao where Enagas has a 50 percent stake.

As per the LNG carrier British Sponsor, the vessel left the giant floating LNG producer offshore Mozambique with a partial cargo last month. With this, Mozambique joined the list of LNG producing countries.

BP will buy all of the LNG produced at the FLNG as part of a long-term deal.

In June, the FLNG received its first gas supplies from the Coral South reservoir offshore Mozambique.

Eni discovered Coral back in May 2012 and it operates the Area 4 along its partners ExxonMobil, CNPC, GALP, Kogas, as well as ENH.

Eni’s CEO Claudio Descalzi said in the announcement last month that the supplies from this unit would boost Europe’s energy security.

Europe has this year significantly increased imports of LNG as European countries look to replace pipeline gas supplies from Russia.

Besides this FLNG, Eni is also working on a second floating LNG producer to install it offshore Mozambique.
