Poland’s dominant gas firm PGNiG said it has placed an order to book regasification capacity at Gaz-System’s planned FSRU-based LNG terminal in Gdansk Bay.
In December, Gaz-System, the operator of Poland’s first LNG import terminal in Swinoujscie, launched a binding open season to verify market interest in the FSRU project.
The FSRU terminal would have a capacity of up to 6.1 bcm per year, but this could increase depending on market developments and growth in demand for natural gas in Poland and the region.
PGNiG said in a statement it has placed an order under the first phase of the open season procedure for the FSRU, but it did not provide any information regarding the volumes.
The procedure aims to verify the interest of market participants in the regasification capacity of the FSRU terminal by submission of binding long-term orders for the use of regasification services.
Also, this would justify the implementation of the LNG import project backed by the EU.
Depending on the outcome of this phase, Gaz-System plans to launch the second phase of
the procedure, involving allocation of the regasification capacity among the participants and a final investment decision, PGNiG said.
The provision of regasification services would commence on January 1, 2028, subject to FID and timely completion of the project, it said.
PGNiG is in charge of all the supplies coming to the Swinoujscie import terminal operated by Gaz-System.
Last year, PGNiG finalized a deal to buy more LNG from US exporter Venture Global LNG, amending an original contract concluded back in 2018.
As a result, PGNiG’s contracted volume from Venture Global LNG will increase to 5.5 million mt or 7.4 bcm of gas per year.
