BW LNG, a unit of Singapore-based gas giant BW, has joined forces with South Korean shipbuilder DSME and Hi Air Korea to test newly developed carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant designed for ships.
According to a social media post by BW LNG, the partners would conduct the tests on its newbuild LNG carrier currently under construction at DSME.
BW LNG said the partners would test the CCS plant during the vessel’s sea and gas trials.
The ship in question is the 173,400-cbm ME-GI LNG carrier, BW Cassia (Hull 2510), scheduled for delivery later this year.
The CCS system captures CO2 from the exhaust gas in a dedicated scrubber and stores it onboard as a solid in dedicated storage tanks, BW LNG said.
CCS is deemed as one of the promising decarbonization measures, necessary to reach the world’s climate goals, according to BW LNG.
The LNG shipping firm added that the tests would contribute to further development of the system and its technology by providing valuable data points from live operation.
Last month, Greek LNG shipping firm GasLog also joined forces with DSME and ABS to develop a carbon capture and storage system on board LNG carriers.
The partners signed a joint development agreement and plan to install such tech on four 174,000-cbm ME-GI LNG carriers GasLog ordered at DSME last year.
