Hyundai Heavy to build LNG carrier trio

South Korea’s shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries will build three LNG carriers for an unidentified owner as part of a contract revealed on Friday.

Parent firm Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering said in a filing to the stock exchange the deal has a price tag of about 636.4 billion won ($570.9 million).

Furthermore, Hyundai Heavy will deliver the LNG carriers to an owner based in Asia by July 2024, according to the filling.

KSOE did not reveal any additional information.

Shipbuilding sources tell LNG Prime that Hyundai LNG Shipping is behind the order for the three carriers. Petronas would charter the trio to ship volumes from the Shell-led LNG Canada development, according to the sources.

Worth mentioning here, South Korea’s Kogas, also a partner in LNG Canada, recently ordered an LNG bunkering vessel at Hyundai Heavy as it looks to further boost its fueling business.

The vessel with a capacity of 7,500 cbm marks the first LNG bunkering ship order for Hyundai Heavy but also for Kogas.
