Samsung Heavy to build five LNG carriers for more than $1 billion

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries has secured a new order to build five liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

The new contract is worth about 1.45 trillion won ($1.08 billion), or about $216 million per vessel.

SHI said it would deliver the five LNG carriers to an unidentified owner in Oceania by December 2027.

It did not provide any additional information.

Earlier this month, Samsung Heavy revealed an order for two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers linked to Greece’s Minerva Marine and US energy giant ExxonMobil.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime on Wednesday that Seapeak, previously known as Teekay LNG Partners, could be behind the order for these five LNG carriers.

These vessels are expected to go on charter to ExxonMobil as well, according to the sources.

We could not confirm this by the time this article was published.

Including this newest contract, SHI secured orders worth about $9.2 billion this year, surpassing its target of $8.8 billion.

This includes 35 LNG carriers, marking a record for the largest number of orders for LNG carriers in a year for the shipbuilder.

In 2021, Samsung won orders worth $12.2 billion, surpassing its annual target of $9.1 billion by about $3.1 billion. The yard won contracts for 22 LNG carriers last year.
