DEME’s dredger in first Antwerp LNG bunkering

DEME’s trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River last week completed a milestone LNG fueling operation in the Belgian port of Antwerp.

According to the dredging firm, this move marked the first-ever LNG bunkering to a dredger in the port of Antwerp. The operation took place near the Kallo lock.

DEME regularly fuels its vessels with partner Titan LNG that recently took delivery of a bunkering barge that will work in the Antwerp port and region.

In addition to the bunkering, Scheldt River is currently carrying out maintenance dredging work on the Scheldt on behalf of the Flemish government to ensure the port’s maritime accessibility.

The LNG-powered dredging works will ensure that vessels can reach the Flemish sea ports easily, DEME said.

To remind, Deme took delivery of the Scheldt River in 2017 as one of the first dredgers to go on LNG.

The Belgian firm has been heavily investing in dual-fuel vessels and has several LNG-powered dredgers but also a cable installation vessel and an offshore installation vessel.
