Doeksen says second Dutch LNG ferry enters service

Dutch ferry operator Rederij Doeksen said its second LNG-powered ferry, Willem de Vlamingh, has started working in the Wadden Sea.

The firm put the new LNG catamaran into service on January 26. It will work on the ferry connection to Dutch Terschelling island.

The vessel is a sister ship to Willem Barentsz that entered service in July last year.

Strategic Marine shipyard in Vietnam built both of the ships while Doeksen completed final outfitting and commissioning.

The BMT-designed 70 meters long LNG catamaran features Rolls-Royce twin MTU gas engines.

In addition, the 16-cylinder mtu series 4000 gas engines produce an output of 1492 kW, and the ferry can reach a top speed of 14 knots.

The two new vessels have the capacity to transport up to 600 passengers and 64 cars across the Wadden Sea.

Doeksen says these ships are the first Dutch single-fuel LNG-powered ferries.

Moreover, the firm aims to fuel the new ships in the future with bio-LNG or LBG.
