K Line takes delivery of LNG-powered car carrier

Japanese shipping giant K Line has taken delivery of its new LNG-powered car carrier from Tadotsu yard, part of Imabari Shipbuilding Group.

The 200 meters long dual-fuel vessel named Century Highway Green is equipped with MAN B&W ME-GI engines.

Furthermore, the ship also features a C type 2,439 cbm LNG tank supplied by TGE Marine Gas Engineering, a unit of Mitsui E&S Group. It also has Nokia’s digital technologies.

It marks the first LNG-powered car carrier to join K Line’s fleet. To remind, Tadotsu launched the vessel in August last year.

K Line said it opted for LNG as fuel to respond to stricter international fuel rules but also to slash shipping emissions.

The firm said it arranged an operating lease for the LNG-fueled car carrier through a “climate transition loan” with Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank.

K Line claims this 5.9 billion yen ($54 million) loan marks the first “climate transition finance” in Japan.
