BV wraps up Ghana FRU classification work

Paris-based Bureau Veritas said it has completed the classification of Ghana’s Torman FRU in the Port of Tema as the facility prepares to receive its first LNG cargo.

The classification and certification scope, included the design, review, approval, material certification, and construction surveys of the LNG FRU at China’s Jiangnan shipyard, as well as Tema port, BV said in a statement.

Additionally, BV’s marine and offshore unit ensured verification and surveys associated with the design, fabrication, and incorporation of the natural gas send-out heater skid system onto the FRU, it said.

During the unit’s service years, BV would also support Gasfin’s management of the FRU, “reassuring stakeholders of the structural soundness of the unit and its safety, through regular conformity checks to BV’ classification rules and international standards,” it said.

First cargo expected soon

Helios Investment Partners controls Tema LNG Terminal Company (TLTC), the operator of the import facility. TLTC recently awarded a contract to Spain’s Reganosa to maintain and operate the facility.

Luxembourg-based LNG infrastructure firm Gasfin Development is also a partner in the first LNG import facility in sub-Saharan Africa that will cater to Ghana’s growing energy demand.

The 28,000-cbm barge-based FRU will work along an LNG carrier serving as a floating storage unit for the $350 million Tema import project.

The 94.90 meters long FRU features two TGE’s type-C tanks and five modular compact regasification modules.

Moreover, the FRU has a regasification capacity of around 1.7 million tons of LNG per year and will serve the Tema import project for about 20 years.

The terminal is backed by Shell and the LNG giant’s long-term gas supply agreement with Ghana National Petroleum Corp.

Shell should deliver the first LNG cargo to the facility soon.
