Japan’s Inpex receives first carbon-neutral LNG cargo from Ichthys project

Japan’s Inpex said it has received its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at the Naoetsu import terminal in Niigata prefecture.

The 148,000-cbm Symphonic Breeze has delivered the cargo from the Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG export facility in Australia, Inpex said in a statement on Friday.

Inpex said the shipment marks the company’s first offtake of carbon-neutral LNG.

Moreover, its major partner in the Ichthys venture, TotalEnergies, would offset the carbon footprint of the LNG shipment using carbon credits as part of a deal between the two firms.

This entails offsetting greenhouse gas emissions across the project’s entire natural gas supply chain including upstream production, liquefaction, transportation, regasification, marketing but also end-use, the Japanese firm said.

Inpex said it would supply the carbon-neutral regasified LNG to its customers in Japan, in response to their needs.

In addition, the carbon credits used to offset the shipment’s carbon footprint meet the verified carbon standard deriving from greenhouse gas reduction efforts at global forest conservation projects, the firm said.

Inpex has set goals to achieve its own net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and this carbon-neutral LNG shipment would help that goal, according to the firm.
