Meyer Werft floats out second LNG-powered vessel for AIDA Cruises

Germany’s Meyer Werft has floated out the second LNG-powered cruise ship for Carnival Corporation’s AIDA Cruises.

The latest newbuilding of the AIDA fleet showed itself to the world for the first time on July 10 after leaving the construction hall of the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg.

Prior to entering service in December 2021, Meyer Werft needs to complete all AIDAcosma’s interior areas at the outfitting pier, and the subsequent test cruises, according to a statement by AIDA.

The new ship will sail seven-day cruises around the Canary Islands in its premiere season in winter 2021/2022.

From April 13, 2022, the ship will set off on a transfer voyage to the Mediterranean. Subsequently, seven-day cruises to the Mediterranean treasures from Mallorca or Barcelona are on the program as well.

To remind, Meyer Werft delivered sister ship AIDAnova, claimed to be the world’s first ocean liner with an LNG drive system, back in 2018.

With a gross tonnage of 183,200 and a length of 337 meters, the LNG-powered sister ships have 20 decks and space for 2,600 staterooms.

In addition, the third ship in the Helios Class should set sail in 2023, but this vessel will go to Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line, a unit of Carnival Corporation, as part of a deal revealed in June.
