Japan’s Toho Gas to supply carbon-neutral city gas

Japan’s city gas supplier and LNG importer Toho Gas said it would soon start supplying carbon-neutral city gas to its customers.

The Japanese firm said in a statement it has signed contracts to deliver carbon-neutral city gas to six companies.

In addition, the supplies will start on August 1 and last until September 2026, according to Toho Gas.

This switch to carbon-neutral city gas would contribute to a total reduction of about 200,000 tons of CO2, it said.

The new move follows the delivery of the first carbon-neutral LNG cargo for Toho Gas at the Chita terminal near Nagoya, where Toho Gas jointly operates the LNG terminal with Jera.

Diamond Gas International, a unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation, delivered the cargo in April and purchased carbon credits to offset the emissions associated with the shipment.

Toho Gas said then it would continue buying carbon-neutral LNG in order to slash emissions.

Diamond Gas and Toho Gas previously signed a deal for the delivery of LNG from the Cameron project in the US.

Besides Cameron, the city gas supplier gets LNG from Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, and Russia. It would also receive the fuel from Shell’s LNG Canada project after the facility launches.
