Wartsila to supply engines for two Tasmanian LNG-powered ferries

Finland’s Wartsila has secured a contract to supply dual-fuel engines for two LNG-powered car and passenger ferries ordered by Tasmanian shipping company TT-Line.

Finnish shipbuilder Rauma Marine Constructions won the order to build the Ro-Pax ferries earlier this year.

Wartsila said in a statement it had secured the contract in June this year.

TT-Line currently operates two ferries, Spirit of Tasmania I and Spirit of Tasmania II, both of which operate with Wartsila engines, on the route between Melbourne, Victoria and Devonport, Tasmania.

The two new 212 metre long vessels will adopt the latest technology and go on LNG to lessen the environmental impact.

Wartsila said it would supply four 46DF dual-fuel main engines and three 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines for each ship.

In addition, the firm will deliver two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage, supply, and control systems for the vessels.

The new ferries will have a capacity of 1800 passengers and about 2500 lane metres on two freight decks.

Rauma should deliver the first vessel by the end of 2023, with the second one due a year later.
