Adnoc sells blue ammonia cargo to Inpex

UAE’s Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (Adnoc) said it has sold a blue ammonia cargo to Japan’s LNG operator Inpex for use in power generation.

Fertiglobe, a partnership between Dutch firm OCI and Adnoc, will produce the blue ammonia from its Fertil plant in the Ruwais industrial complex in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement by Adnoc.

Adnoc said it sold the shipment at an “attractive premium” to grey ammonia, which is produced without CO2 capture and sequestration.

Moreover, the firm said the shipment “underscores the favorable economics for blue ammonia as an emerging source of low-carbon energy.”

Adnoc did not reveal any additional information regarding the shipment.

The firm has earlier in August sold two cargoes of blue ammonia to Japan’s Itochu and Idemitsu while this cargo marks the first for Inpex.

Inpex said in a separate statement it would get the cargo in an ISO tank container and would utilize it in “energy fields including a demonstration as a power generation
fuel.”

“Through this exercise, Inpex plans to work closely with Adnoc to implement a
demonstration supply chain extending from the production of clean ammonia to its end-use,” the Ichthys LNG operator said.
