Japan’s Inpex to supply carbon-neutral LNG cargo to Shizuoka Gas

Japan’s Inpex said it would deliver this week a carbon-neutral LNG shipment to compatriot city gas supplier and terminal operator Shizuoka Gas.

Inpex said in a statement the LNG cargo of about 70 thousand tons would arrive at the Sodeshi LNG terminal in Japan’s Shizuoka prefecture on September 4.

Shimizu LNG, a Shizuoka Gas company, operates the facility. Shizuoka Gas said in a separate statement the shipment marks its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo and it would supply it to its city gas customers.

Moreover, Inpex said it would offset the carbon footprint of the LNG shipment using carbon credits applied to greenhouse gas emissions across the entire natural gas supply chain.

This includes upstream production, liquefaction, transportation, regasification, marketing but also combustion by customers in Japan, according to the Ichthys LNG operator.

“The carbon credits used to offset the shipment’s carbon footprint meet the Verified Carbon
Standard deriving from greenhouse gas reduction efforts at global forest conservation projects, etc,” Inpex said.

The firm did not provide any additional details.

To remind, Inpex has in July received its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at the Naoetsu import terminal in Niigata prefecture as it looks to further slash its emissions.

Also, the 148,000-cbm Symphonic Breeze delivered the cargo from the Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG export facility in Australia.
