MOL’s tug in first carbon-neutral LNG bunkering operation

Japan’s Osaka Gas and Daigas Energy have for the first time supplied carbon-neutral LNG to MOL’s tug Ishin.

Operated by MOL’s Nihon Tug-Boat, the vessel received carbon-neutral LNG via a truck-to-ship method at the wharf in Sakai Senboku Port, Osaka, on September 1, according to a statement by MOL.

MOL said this marks the first use of carbon-neutral LNG as vessel fuel in Japan.

“The carbon-neutral designation means that all greenhouse gases, generated throughout the life cycle of natural gas extraction, liquefaction, transport, production, and combustion processes, were offset by credit,” MOL said.

The firm did not provide further information on the carbon-neutral shipment.

MOL expects carbon-neutral LNG to gain wide adoption in the future for general use as well as vessel fuel.

Nihon Tug-Boat operates LNG-powered Ishin since February 2019 while the vessel gets fuel from Daigas.

Daigas and Nihon Tug-Boat signed a memorandum of understanding for the supply of carbon-neutral LNG over several years, MOL said.
