BASF supplies gas treatment tech for Petronas’ second FLNG project

German chemical giant BASF said it has supplied its gas treatment technology for the latest floating LNG project developed by Malaysia’s Petronas.

To remind, Petronas shipped the first cargo in May from its second floating LNG producer located in the Rotan gas field, offshore Sabah.

Also, Petronas and the Japanese engineering partner JGC Corporation produced the first LNG at the 1.5 mtpa PFLNG Dua in February.

BASF said in a statement on Thursday that Petronas has previously selected its OASE purple technology for the project’s acid gas removal unit process.

According to BASF, this marks the first FLNG reference worldwide for the company’s OASE gas treatment technology.

OASE purple is an amine-based solution that removes acid gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from natural gas, BASF said.

The removal of acid gases is necessary to prepare the gas for liquefaction and subsequent pipeline transportation, it said.

Besides this floating producer, Petronas operates the 1.2 mtpa PFLNG Satu that started producing LNG from the Kanowit gas field, offshore Sarawak in December 2016, but Petronas later relocated this unit to the Kebabangan cluster field offshore Sabah.

The 365 meters long PFLNG Satu started LNG production off Sabah in May 2019.

Recent reports also suggest that Petronas has issued a front-end engineering and design tender for a third floating LNG producer, PFLNG Tiga.
