Samsung Heavy scores new order for LNG-powered containerships

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries said Thursday it won an order to build six LNG-powered container vessels.

Samsung Heavy said in a stock exchange announcement it would build the LNG-powered vessels for an unidentified European owner.

The order for the vessels has a price tag of 841.2 billion won ($718 million), it said.

In addition, the Korean yard said it would deliver the ships by November 2024.

The yard did not reveal any additional information.

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that France’s CMA CGM, which is heavily investing in LNG-powered vessels, could be the owner behind this order for six 7,600 TEU vessels. We could not confirm this by the time this article was published.

Including this contract, Samsung Heavy won orders worth $7.8 billion so far this year for 60 ships, reaching 86 percent of its annual target.

Samsung Heavy has last month revealed an order for two 180,000-cbm LNG carriers.

It also recently confirmed it was in talks to build four plus two ice-classed LNG carriers which would serve Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project in the Russian Arctic.
