Harvey adds battery power to second LNG PSV

US privately-owned firm Harvey Gulf International Marine said it has installed a battery pack onboard its second LNG-powered platform supply vessel.

Now the PSV Harvey Power, which is already a dual-fuel vessel capable of ruining both on LNG and diesel, features a Wartsila battery-power system. The vessel has already started work.

New Orleans-based Harvey claims that with this move the vessel becomes the second “tri-fuel” ship in America, following its first LNG PSV with battery power.

In addition, Harvey Power has also received an emissions monitoring system that would allow the company to track the vessel’s emissions in real time, it said in a statement.

The shipowner led by Shane Guidry has three additional LNG-powered PSV’s lined up for upgrade with batteries, yielding a fleet of five “tri-fueled” vessels.

Harvey Gulf expects the conversion for the final three vessels to complete by March 31, 2022.

Finland-based Wartsila won a contract last year to supply energy storage systems for four Harvey Gulf’s four LNG-powered PSVs.

After that, Wartsila awarded a deal for the systems to Corvus Energy.

The four LNG-battery hybrid vessels Harvey Liberty, Harvey Power, Harvey Freedom, and Harvey America will feature the 1100VDC – 745 kWh ESSs.
