Costa Cruises’ newbuild wraps up first LNG bunkering op at Meyer Werft

Finland’s Meyer Turku yard continues to progress with the construction of the second LNG-powered cruise ship for Carnival Corporation’s Costa Cruises.

The 185,000 GT Costa Toscana has completed its first LNG bunkering operation, prior to its trials.

Last week, the Gasum-chartered 5,800-cbm Coralius bunkering vessel provided the first LNG supply to the newbuild currently under construction at Meyer Turku.

To remind, the yard floated out the LNG-powered cruise ship in January this year. It is a sister vessel to Costa Smeralda that joined the Italian brand of Carnival in 2019.

Meyer Turku started working on Costa Toscana last year with a steel cutting ceremony in July 2019.

The yard should deliver the vessel by the end of this year.

Carnival and its units are heavily investing in LNG-powered vessels as they look to slash emissions and costs.

Costa Group, which includes Costa Cruises, Germany-based AIDA Cruises and Costa Asia, has ordered several new LNG-powered ships. Two of these, Costa Smeralda and AIDAnova, are already in operation.
