Japex gets carbon-neutral LNG cargo at Soma terminal

Japan Petroleum Exploration Co (Japex) said it has received its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at the Soma import terminal in Shinchi town.

Tokyo-based Japex said it bought the cargo along with carbon credits to offset the emissions associated with the shipment from Diamond Gas International, a unit of Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation.

The 174,000-cbm newbuild LNG carrier Diamond Gas Crystal delivered the shipment on October 7 at the Soma terminal.

According to its AIS data, the vessel previously loaded the shipment at Cheniere’s Sabine Pass terminal in the US.

Japex said it has purchased this carbon-neutral LNG to respond to requests from the company’s clients. It expects to distribute the regasified LNG to six city gas companies.

In addition, Japex said it would consider “not only procuring carbon-neutral LNG but also distributing natural gas produced in Japan as well as LNG procured from overseas with CO2 credits purchased by ourselves.”
