MAN and DP World ink decarbonization pact

Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions and Dubai-based ports operator DP World are joining forces to work on solutions aimed at reducing the environmental impact of shipping traffic, including LNG as fuel.

The agreement targets common progress in the field of decarbonization and would run for five years with an option to extend thereafter, according to a joint statement.

Mutual areas of interest for the two companies include green-fuels infrastructure, future-proof conversions such as LNG, methanol, and ammonia, the statement said.

The areas also include hybrid drives, electric engines R&D and training, and investigation of their respective, global footprints to further reduce the environmental impact of shipping traffic in terms of fuel consumption and emissions.

Synthetic LNG

MAN has previously collaborated with DP World on many occasions.

The most recent collaboration took place in Germany for the world’s first bunkering of a ship with synthetic LNG.

The 1,036 TEU feeder container vessel ElbBlue, chartered by DP World’s Unifeeder, received 20 tons of carbon-neutral synthetic LNG in the port of Brunsbuttel.

MAN converted the ship back in 2017 to dual-fuel power.
