CMA CGM says LNG containership breaks new record

CMA CGM said its LNG-powered containership Montmartre has set a new world record for the number of full containers loaded on a single vessel.

The 23,000 TEU containership is carrying 21,755 full containers, the French shipping line said via its social media channels on Friday.

“Yet more evidence of the group’s efforts to increase its capacity and meet our customers’ needs in the run-up to this year’s holiday season,” CMA CGM said.

The firm did not reveal any additional information.

According to its AIS data, LNG-powered Montmartre departed Singapore on October 12 and was on Monday located in the Suez Canal.

The vessel, sixth out of nine ultra-large LNG-powered containerships, works on the CMA CGM French Asia Line, connecting Asia with Europe.

CMA CGM took delivery of this vessel from China’s Jiangnan Shipyard in March this year.

These nine ships are 400 meters long and 61 meters wide and feature WinGD’s dual-fuel engines but also GTT’s 18,600-cbm fuel tank.

These are the world’s largest LNG-powered vessels and the flagship in this fleet, Jacques Saade, previously already broke a record for the number of full containers loaded on a single vessel.

CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and previously said it had expected to have 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.

Sources recently told LNG Prime that CMA CGM has also ordered six 7,600 TEU LNG-powered vessels at South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries.
