South Korea’s KSOE reveals order for 10 LNG-powered containerships

South Korea’s shipbuilder Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has revealed an order for ten new LNG-powered containerships worth about 745.6 billion won ($627 million).

KSOE’s unit Hyundai Mipo Dockyard would build the 2,000 TEU vessels for a European shipping company, the firm said in a statement on Tuesday.

The vessels will be 204 meters long and 29 meters wide and have ice-class 1A notation, according to KSOE.

Hyundai Mipo will deliver the ships by the second half of 2024.

KSOE did not reveal any additional info on the new order.

With the latest orders, KSOE has won in total $22.5 billion in orders, exceeding this year’s order target of $14.9 billion for about $7.6 billion.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that France’s CMA CGM could be behind this order for the small container vessels.

CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and expects to have at least 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.

Hamburg-based Containerships, a unit of France’s CMA CGM, already operates six 1,380 TEU LNG-powered feeder container vessels in the Baltic Sea.

All of the vessels are 170 meters long featuring 1A ice-class notation and dual-fuel engines.
