Vard reveals new LNG bunkering vessel design

Vard Engineering AS, a unit of Norway-based Vard, said it has developed a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel design.

The firm said in a statement the LNG bunkering vessel is intended for local distribution, STS operations, and short and medium distance transport.

In addition, the design can accommodate between 5,000 and 7,500 cbm of LNG and cargo or vapor conditioning systems according to client preferences, the firm said.

It utilizes the company’s platform developed for zero-emission Norwegian coastal transport.

Vard Engineering said it can deliver the design in both seagoing and inland versions with lowered bridge and even more decreased draft.

The designer did not provide any additional information.

Back in 2016, Vard Engineering had received approval in principle from classification society DNV for its 6,500-cbm LNG bunkering vessel design.

The number of LNG-powered vessels continues to rise as owners look to slash emissions and costs, and in parallel, there is an increasing number of LNG bunkering ships in operation and on order.

Worth mentioning here, Vard Engineering’s parent and a unit of Italy’s Fincantieri, Vard, has recently delivered Ponant’s LNG-powered, hybrid-electric polar cruise and exploration vessel.

Ponant claims this is the world’s first LNG-powered, hybrid-electric passenger vessel to navigate in polar waters.
