Wartsila to provide tech for CMA CGM’s LNG-fueled containerships

Finland’s Wartsila said it has won a contract to supply a broad scope of solutions for 12 new LNG-fueled container ships ordered by France’s CMA CGM.

CMA CGM booked these LNG-powered containerships at two Chinese yards last year. Hudong-Zhonghua will build six 13,000 TEU ships while Jiangnan will construct six 15,000 TEU vessels.

Wartsila said in a statement it had received orders for the equipment in the third and the fourth quarter of 2021.

The tech firm will supply for each vessel five 34DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines, or 60 engines in total, delivered from its joint venture in China.

In addition, the orders include Wartsila’s integrated control system, propulsion control system, sewage treatment plants, and fuel gas supply system.

Wartsila said it would start delivering the equipment to the yards in 2022, while the first of the 12 vessels should be launched in the third quarter of 2023.

It did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

The firm has previously supplied a similar scope for nine 23,000 TEU CMA CGM vessels and five 15,000 TEU ships of which three are still under construction.
