Island Offshore adding battery power to LNG PSVs

Norway’s Island Offshore is adding battery power to its three platform supply vessels to boost efficiency and further slash emissions.

Two of the ships, Island Crusader and Island Contender, use LNG as main fuel while the Island Commander runs on diesel engines.

Island Offshore contracted Kongsberg Maritime to supply hybrid battery solutions, it said on Tuesday.

Kongsberg also delivered design, propulsion, engines and other main equipment when the vessels were built.

All three vessels are chartered by Lundin Energy Norway on long-term contracts.

Adding batteries will allow the PSVs to run on fewer engines improving efficiency and delivering power on demand.

Accoridng to Kongsberg, this is ideal ideal in the context of low-load operations such as dynamic positioning.

Fuel consumption and running costs will also be reduced through conversion of the vessels to closed bus-tie operation, it said.
