Wartsila inks deal with Brittany Ferries to support LNG-powered Salamanca

Finland’s Wartsila will provide technical support via a long-term service agreement for its solutions installed on the LNG-powered RoPax vessel, Salamanca, chartered by French shipping firm Brittany Ferries.

According to a Wartsila statement on Friday, the two firms signed the 10-year agreement in December 2021.

Brittany Ferries took delivery of the vessel it chartered from Sweden’s Stena RoRo on November 30.

The extensive scope of the service agreement includes remote operational support and Wartsila’s Expert Insight digital predictive maintenance solution.

Also, the deal includes long-term maintenance planning emphasizing a fully controlled and optimized maintenance budget, it said,

Wartsila did not provide the price tag of the deal.

The firm said Brittany Ferries would inaugurate the vessel on March 25, while it would make its first commercial sailing from Portsmouth, U.K. to Bilbao, Spain on March 27.

Salamanca is the first LNG-fuelled passenger ferry to operate from the U.K.

Built at CMJL, the vessel features two Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel main engines and three 20DF dual-fuel auxiliary engines, as well as two Wartsila’s LNGPac fuel storage, supply and control systems.

Its engines are also adapted to utilize “even cleaner” fuels, such as synthetic or bio-methane, as and when they become available, Wartsila said.
