Kogas and Sempra ink LNG, hydrogen cooperation deal

South Korean LNG importing giant Kogas said it has signed a deal with a unit of US energy firm Sempra to cooperate in LNG and hydrogen.

Kogas and Sempra Infrastructure signed the memorandum of understanding on April 1, according to a statement by Kogas.

Besides hydrogen and carbon capture, the two firms would also work on carbon capture, Kogas said.

In particular, the two companies decided to strengthen their cooperation to respond to global carbon-neutral policies and expand participation in low-carbon projects, it said.

Back in 2017, Sempra’s unit, Australia’s Woodside, and Kogas signed a memorandum of understanding for the planned Port Arthur LNG export development. Woodside decided to exit this development in 2018.

Sempra Infrastructure already operates the 12 mtpa Cameron LNG plant in Louisiana and is building ECA LNG Phase 1, an approximately 3-mtpa liquefaction facility in Baja California, Mexico.

The firm is also working on the Vista Pacífico LNG export project in Mexico’s Topolobampo.

On the other side, Kogas currently operates four large-scale LNG terminals, namely Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Tongyeong, and Samcheok, as well as a small-scale regasification terminal at the Aewol port on Jeju island.

The LNG importer is building a large terminal in Dangjin as well.
