Carnival’s LNG-powered Mardi Gras kicks off sea trials

Carnival Cruise Line’s new LNG-powered Mardi Gras left on Monday the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland for sea trials.

The vessel will spend the next 10 days at sea before returning to the yard for final works, Meyer Turku said in a statement.

Following completion in Finland, the vessel will depart to the US Port Canaveral in Florida. Carnival expects the vessel to start operating week-long itineraries as of February 6.

According to the US firm, the 340 meters long ship is the biggest in its fleet and also the first North American LNG-powered cruise ship.

The ship will have the capacity to host up to 6,500 passengers in more than 2,600 staterooms, including 180 suites across 11 different categories.

Prior to its sea trials, the vessel completed its first LNG bunkering operation on September 13 taking fuel from the Gasum-chartered Coralius.
