Seaspan orders LNG-powered containerships at K Shipbuilding

Seaspan, a unit of Atlas Corp, has ordered eight LNG-powered containerships at South Korea’s K Shipbuilding, according to brokers and shipbuilding sources.

The LNG dual-fuel vessels will have a capacity of 8,000 TEU, Clarksons, Intermodal and Alphaliner said in separate reports.

K Shipbuilding would deliver these ships from the second quarter of 2024 until the first half of 2025.

The price tag of each ship is about $130 million.

Intermodal also said that Seaspan has signed a long-term charter deal with Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC for the newbuilds.

Last year, Seaspan and Israel’s ZIM signed a charter deal for ten 15,000 TEU vessels that will serve the latter’s Asia-US East Coast trade.

Seaspan placed the order for these dual-fuel ships at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

After this agreement, Seaspan and ZIM also signed charter deals for 15 7,000 TEU LNG-powered container vessels. China’s Jiangsu New Yangzi will build these ships.

On the other side, MSC is building a huge fleet of LNG-powered containerships.

Brokers and shipbuilding sources recently said that the firm had placed orders for 20 LNG-powered ships in China and South Korea.

New Times would build 14 7,900-teu LNG-dual fuel containerships while HHI would construct six vessels for MSC.

MSC, which operates a fleet of more than 600 vessels, recently welcomed its first LNG-powered containership.

China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in Jiangsu built the 14,280-teu MSC Washington for the giant shipping firm.
