Yanmar wins order for Japan’s LNG ferries

Japan’s Yanmar said Thursday it has received an order from compatriot Mitsui O.S.K. Lines to supply engines for two LNG-powered ferries.

Under the deal, Yanmar will supply 8EY26LDF engines that will power generators on board the ferries named Sunflower Kurenai and Sunflower Murasaki.

Furthermore, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s Shimonoseki yard will build both of the vessels claimed to be Japan’s first LNG-powered ferries.

MOL’s unit Ferry Sunflower will charter the ferries after delivery and launch them on its Osaka-Beppu route in 2023.

To remind, Wartsila previously won a contract to supply a complete package for the duo. This includes the 31DF engine, gearbox, and LNGPac storage.

The 200 metres long ferries will be capable of carrying about 763 passengers, 136 trucks and 100 cars at a speed of 22.5 knots.
