El Salvador FSRU completes second STS LNG op

The 137,000-cbm BW Tatiana FSRU has completed its second ship-to-ship transfer in El Salvador’s Acajutla, where it serves the Energia del Pacífico (EDP) LNG-to-power project.

BW LNG, a unit of the Singapore-based gas shipping giant BW, said in a social media post on Wednesday that the FSRU received the cargo from its sister vessel Shandong Juniper. The 2004-built LNG carrier, operated by Shell, has a capacity of 138,104 cbm.

El Salvador’s first FSRU, is now fully operational, injecting gas to the 378-megawatt power plant that will supply 30 percent of the country’s total energy demand, according to BW LNG.

Prior to this cargo, the FSRU completed its first STS operation with Knutsen’s LNG carrier Bilbao Knutsen on April 1.

To remind, the FSRU left the Keppel Tuas shipyard in Singapore in August last year and arrived at its new home in the port of Acajutla in October.

Keppel won the contract from a joint venture consisting of BW’s LNG unit and US-based Invenergy to convert Shell’s LNG carrier Gallina to an FSRU.

The converted vessel is Central America’s first FSRU, representing a key component of the LNG-to-power project, according to the partners.

In addition, two new SAAM Towage tugs are serving the FSRU and the LNG-to-power project.
