LNG-fueled Disney Wish arrives at Port Canaveral

Disney Cruise Line’s LNG-powered Disney Wish has arrived at Port Canaveral, Florida from Europe.

“The long-awaited addition to the Port Canaveral based Disney fleet arrived before dawn this morning escorted by a flotilla of Port-based tugboats and the Port Canaveral Fire Rescue Fireboat 2 providing the traditional water cannon salute,” the Canaveral Port Authority said in a statement on Monday.

Earlier this month, Germany’s Meyer Werft delivered this vessel to Disney Cruise Line, a unit of the US-based Walt Disney Company, the first 339.5 meters long LNG-powered vessel out of three ships.

Meyer Werft should deliver the second and the third LNG-powered vessel to Disney Cruise Line in 2024 and 2025, respectfully.

Homeported at Port Canaveral, Disney Wish will offer three- and four-night itineraries to the Bahamas with stops at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The vessel will depart on its inaugural sailing from the port’s cruise terminal 8 on July 14th, according to the statement.

At about 144,000 gross tons and 1,250 guest staterooms, the vessel is slightly larger than Disney Fantasy, which is also homeported at Port Canaveral.

Port Canaveral is currently the only cruise port in North America to support LNG fueling of vessels and it now hosts two LNG-powered cruise ships.

Last year, Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras met with the Shell-chartered Q-LNG bunkering barge for the first refueling operation in its homeport of Port Canaveral.
