Germany’s Hegelmann orders 150 Iveco LNG-powered trucks

German transport and logistics firm Hegelmann has ordered 150 Iveco S-Way LNG-powered trucks, as it looks to further slash emissions.

Besides the LNG-powered trucks, Hegelmann also placed an order for ten S-Way CNG tractor units, Italy-based truck manufacturer Iveco said in a statement.

These trucks would extend Hegelmann’s “green fleet”, which already operates 20 LNG-powered Iveco trucks enabling the company to achieve “significant reductions” in CO2 emissions over the last few years, the statement said.

“In fact, a virtually carbon-neutral operation on a well-to-wheel is already possible today with the Iveco S-WAY LNG/CNG when running on biomethane,” it said.

Decision taken despite very high LNG prices

The vehicles on order are 4×2 standard tractor units featuring an ample Active Space cab with a high roof line.

They are powered by a 460 hp Cursor 13 natural gas engine that complies with the Euro VI Step E emission standards, according to Iveco.

The LNG trucks come with two 540-liter LNG tanks, fitted on each side of the vehicle, providing a total capacity of at least 390 kg of liquid bio-LNG, for a range of up to 1,600 kilometers, depending on the deployment scenario, Iveco said.

”In the current situation of exploding LNG prices, the decision was not easy, but we have consciously decided to offer sustainable transports in the long term,” Andreas Schmidt, CSO Hegelmann Group and CEO Hegelmann Germany, said in the statement.

European LNG fueling stations

European network of LNG fueling stations continues to increase and has now more than 560 stations, according to NGVA Europe.

Data by the Brussels-based association shows that there are now 568 LNG and 4169 CNG fueling stations in Europe.

The countries with the highest amount of LNG stations for trucks today include Germany with 128, followed by Italy with 126, the data shows.

Spain hosts 88 LNG filling stations, France 65, the Netherlands 31, and Sweden 28.
