Wallenius SOL christens LNG-powered Botnia Enabler in Sweden

Sweden’s Wallenius SOL has christened the first out of two of its LNG-powered vessels, Botnia Enabler, in the Port of Skelleftea.

The christening ceremony for the 242 meters long LNG-powered ship took place on September 8, according to a statement by Wallenius SOL.

“Botnia Enabler is not only the world’s biggest ice-rated ConRo vessel with multi-fuel operation, but also the biggest ship that has ever called at the Port of Skelleftea,” the firm said.

Botnia Enabler will share the Zeebrugge-Antwerp-Kokkola-Oulu-Kemi-Skelleftea-Travemünde route with its sister ship, Baltic Enabler.

This means weekly calls with a total capacity of 6,442 lane meters (962 TEU), according to Wallenius SOL.

To remind, China’s CIMC Raffles in Yantai delivered Botnia Enabler in May this year, followed by Baltic Enabler in June.

Baltic Enabler recently started working on the mentioned route.

The ships have the highest Finnish-Swedish ice class to cope with the harsh winter conditions in the Gulf of Bothnia.

In addition to their classic RoRo function, the Knud E. Hansen-designed ships have a large capacity for containers.

The ships feature two 685-cbm type C LNG tanks, provided by MAN Cryo, as well as two WinGD dual-fuel main engines.
