India’s Blue Energy unveils first LNG-powered truck

India’s Blue Energy Motors and Italian truck manufacturer Iveco have launched the first LNG-powered truck as part of a deal revealed in July.

Under the deal in July, Iveco’s unit FPT Industrial will supply engines for LNG-powered trucks to Blue Energy.

According to Blue Energy, the two firms unveiled the first LNG truck powered by FPT’s 6.7-liter engine on Monday.

Blue Energy claims this 5528 4×2 tractor is the first domestically-built LNG-powered truck in India.

Prior to launching the new truck, Blue Energy inaugurated India’s first manufacturing plant for LNG-powered trucks at Chakan, Pune.

“The facility reflects Blue Energy Motors’s focus to disrupt the trucking industry in India by manufacturing clean energy, near-zero emissions trucks,” the firm said in a statement.

Indian government previously revealed plans to build a nationwide network of about 1,000 LNG filling stations for trucks.

Companies working on LNG-powered vehicles and stations in India include Petronet LNGGAILShellAG&P, and others.

On the other side, Iveco said in November last year it had a 55 percent market share in Europe for LNG trucks. In total, Iveco sold more than 45,000 natural gas vehicles in Europe.
