Iveco, GLS, Vulcangas launch bio-LNG plant in Italy

Italian truck manufacturer Iveco has joined forces with transport and logistics company GLS Italy and energy supplier Vulcangas to launch a new bio-LNG production plant near Lodi.

The plant at the Cascina Antegnatica farm would produce biomethane with agricultural waste from local farms and supply Vulcangas, according to a statement by Iveco.

Moreover, the bio-LNG would be used to fuel the LNG-powered vehicles in GLS Italy’s fleet, which includes Iveco S-Way LNG trucks.

Iveco did not provide more information regarding the bio-LNG plant.

Biomethane is currently the only mature technology that provides a solution with no compromise on performance and refueling times compared to diesel, Iveco claims.

“It enables carbon neutrality and, depending on the feedstock used in its production, even a carbon-negative performance,” it said.

Its benefits extend beyond the transport sector as an enabler of energy independence with the potential to lower prices and contribute to the development of rural areas, the truck manufacturer said.

Italy currently hosts 124 LNG fueling stations, while Germany hosts 147 such stations. These two countries host almost half of the 590 LNG fueling stations currently available in Europe, according to NGVA Europe data.

There has been an increasing share of bio-LNG in the fuel mix as firms look to slash emissions even further.
