DSME equips LNG-fueled containership with high manganese steel tank

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said it had for the first time installed an LNG fuel tank made of Posco’s high manganese steel onboard a giant LNG-powered containership.

The shipbuilder installed the high manganese steel LNG tank on a 24,000-teu container vessel, according to a statement issued on Monday.

DSME did not reveal more information regarding the containership.

The vessel in question could be the first out of twelve LNG-powered giants DSME is building for Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd.

It recently installed the main engine on this 23,660-teu containership.

DSME said it had developed the high manganese LNG fuel tank through joint research and development with steelmaker Posco.

In June, DSME also installed two type C LNG tanks made of Posco’s high manganese steel onboard an LNG-powered VLCC.

Geneva-based Advantage Tankers took delivery of two of these Shell-chartered tankers last month.

DSME expects these developments with high manganese tanks to further boost the competitiveness of the Korean shipbuilding industry.
