First Dutch bio-LNG plant reaches new milestone

Dutch firm Nordsol has reached a new production milestone at its bio-LNG plant in Amsterdam Westpoort following the start of commercial operations last year.

Nordsol and its partners Shell and Renewi officially launched the first Dutch bio-LNG plant on October 18, 2021, followed by the start of commercial operations later the same month.

In January, the plant reached a milestone of a quarter of a million kilograms of produced bio-LNG.

This week, the facility will accomplish two new milestones.

“Today, the 2000th ton of bio-LNG will be delivered to one of Shell’s fuel stations in the Netherlands,” Nordsol said on Wednesday.

This amount of bio-LNG used by trucks means that the emission of about 9500 tons of fossil CO2 had been prevented, Nordsol claims.

In addition to bio-LNG, the 2000th ton of liquid bio-CO2 would be collected at the plant on Thursday as well, according to the LNG tech firm.

Earlier this year, Shell started offering bio-LNG blended with “regular LNG” to all of its customers in the Netherlands.

Shell has a large network of LNG filling stations in the Netherlands, Germany, and in other European countries.

Besides this bio-LNG plant, Nordsol is also working on other facilities and recently took a final investment decision on the bio-LNG plant in Wilp along with its partners Titan and Attero.

Unlike the bio-LNG plant in Amsterdam Westpoort, this new facility will provide bio-LNG for the shipping sector.
