Chile’s Quintero LNG import terminal gets 500th cargo

Chile’s largest LNG import terminal, GNL Quintero, owned by Fluxys and EIG, has recently received its 500th cargo of liquefied natural gas since the start of operations in 2009.

According to a social media post by GNL Quintero, the 4 mtpa LNG terminal has received the milestone cargo onboard the 2022-built Malaga Knutsen, owned by Knutsen and chartered by Shell.

GNL Quintero did not provide any additional information.

The 174,000-cbm LNG carrier delivered the cargo to the LNG import facility from Trinidad and Tobago on January 27, its AIS data provided by VesselsValue shows.

In July last year, Washington-based energy investor EIG and Belgium’s LNG terminal operator Fluxys completed their deal to buy an 80 percent equity stake in GNL Quintero.

Chile’s Enap also holds a 20 percent in the facility.

Operational since 2009, Quintero is the largest terminal for receiving and unloading LNG in Chile, as well as for its storage and regasification capacities.

Chile also has the 1.5 mtpa Mejillones facility.

The Quintero facility has two LNG storage tanks that can each store up to 160,000 cbm of LNG and one smaller tank with a capacity of 14,000 cbm, and four vaporizers, each with a regasification capacity of about 5 million cubic meters per day, according to its website.

It also has a truck loading station with four bays and a capacity of 2,500 cbm of LNG per day, or about 50 trucks.
