CIMC SOE clinches order for LNG-powered bulkers

China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE) has secured an order to build small LNG dual-fuel bulk carriers.

A unit of China Yangtze Shipping Group, which is part of China Merchant Group’s Sinotrans, has ordered four 12,500-dwt LNG dual-fuel bulkers at CIMC SOE, according to shipbuilding sources and several reports in China.

CIMC ENRIC, part of CIMC ENRIC, is expected to deliver the vessels in 2024 and 2025.

These four vessels will work along the giant Yangtze River and are probably the first LNG-powered bulk carriers for CIMC SOE.

CIMC SOE recently secured orders worth more than 4 billion yuan ($557 million), including this contract.

These include two LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 1,450 teu worth more than 1 billion yuan, the first such order for CIMC SOE. The owner behind this order is said to be Seaboard Marine.

It also secured an order for two LPG/ammonia carriers from Avance Gas worth 900 million yuan and LNG tank orders worth more than 900 million yuan.

The shipbuilder already built small-scale LNG bunkering and supply ships for Avenir LNG, and is constructing two LNG bunkering vessels for Italy’s Fratelli Cosulich, as well as three such ships for Canada’s Seaspan ULC and one for CNOOC.

Besides these vessels, CIMC SOE also has on order three dual-fuel liquid ethylene gas (LEG) carriers from Germany’s Hartmann.
