Gaz-System launches binding season for second Gdansk FSRU

Poland’s Gaz-System has launched a binding season for capacity bookings at the planned second FSRU as part of the LNG import project in Gdansk Bay.

Earlier this year, Gaz-System announced that it will launch a binding season for additional capacity at the FSRU-based LNG import project after a non-binding season.

It assessed both the demand for additional regasification capacity and the interest in export of regasified LNG towards Slovakia, Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, as well as the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

The first FSRU will have a capacity of 6.1 billion cubic meters per year, while the second unit will have a capacity of 4.5 bcm per year.

According to a statement by Gaz System issued last week, the second phase of the open season procedure for the project resulted in receiving offers covering 100 percent of the regasification services.

Gaz System has now formally launched a new open season procedure aimed to increase the regasification capacity of the FSRU terminal with the addition of the second unit.

“The objective of FSRU 2 open season procedure is to confirm the demand for additional regasification capacity through the interested market participants’ submission of binding, long-term offers for FSRU 2 regasification services, thus justifying Gaz-Sytem’s commencement of the implementation of the aforementioned project,” it said.

In the procedure, the participants will be able to acquire the right to regasification services for a period ranging from one year to fifteen years.

Subject to a positive final investment decision, the regasification services shall
be made available as of January 1, 2028, Gaz System said.

One onshore LNG terminal and FSRUs

Gaz System already operates Poland’s first LNG import terminal in Swinoujscie, while the country’s dominant gas firm PGNiG, now part of PKN Orlen, is in charge for all the supplies.

Poland’s LNG imports via the Swinoujscie terminal rose 57 percent in 2022 when compared to the year before, boosted by shipments from the US.

The Gdansk project would be the second LNG import terminal in Poland and the first FSRU-based facility in the country.

Following a binding season launched in 2021, PGNiG also showed interest to book capacity in this LNG terminal in Gdansk Bay.

Earlier this year, Gaz-System also provided an update regarding both the onshore and offshore parts of the project.
