Exmar and Seapeak to equip LPG newbuild duo with ammonia engines

Exmar LPG, a joint venture consisting of Exmar and Seapeak, will equip two midsize gas carriers currently under construction at South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo with dual-fuel ammonia engines.

Belgium’s Exmar said in a statement on Monday that Exmar LPG is going ahead with ammonia as fuel for two midsize gas carriers.

“The ships will be the first ever oceangoing vessels to be propelled by dual-fuel ammonia engines, allowing for close to zero emissions trading when using ammonia,” Exmar said.

Switzerland-based engine maker WinGD, a unit of China’s CSSC, will deliver the engines, while Wartsila Gas Solutions, a unit of Finnish tech firm Wartsila will provide the fuel supply system.

WinGD said in a separate statement that two 52-bore X52DF‑A engines will be delivered in the second quarter of 2025 and will be among the first of WinGD’s ammonia-fueled engines to enter service.

According to Exmar, Hyundai Mipo will deliver the 46,000-cbm vessels in early 2026.

Exmar and Seapeak, previously known as Teekay LNG Partners, ordered two vessels at Hyundai Mipo in September last year and the contract included an option for two more ships.

Exmar said at the time that these ships have the option to be delivered with ammonia dual-fuel propulsion.

The company’s website shows that it has four 46,000-cbm vessels on order.
