NYK adds another LNG-powered PCTC to its fleet

Japan’s NYK has recently taken delivery of another LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier as part of its plans to introduce 20 LNG-fueled PCTCs in its fleet by 2028.

NKY said in a statement it took delivery of Sweet Pea Leader on October 26 at Imabari’s Tadotsu Shipyard.

The firm ordered this vessel from Nihon Shipyard, a joint venture of Imabari and Japan Marine United.

NYK said the LNG-powered PCTC has a capacity of 7,000 units and is 199 meters long and 38 meters wide.

This is NYK’s seventh LNG-fueled PCTC and follows the delivery of Sumire Leader, which recently started its transportation service for Japan’s Mazda Motor.

NYK is positioning LNG fuel as one of the bridge solutions until future zero-emission ships are realized.

It took delivery of Japan’s first LNG-powered PCTC, Sakura Leader, in October 2020, followed by the delivery of its second PCTC, Plumeria Leader, in March last year.

Besides LNG-powered vessels, NYK is working to further expand its fleet of LNG carriers, according to the company’s president and CEO, Takaya Soga.

NYK had 115 LNG carriers in its fleet as of September 30, including pre-delivery vessels with long-term charters.
