Korean Register OKs Hyundai Mipo’s LNG design

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo has recently received approval in principle by the Korean Register for its 30,000 cbm LNG carrier with prismatic IMO type B tank design.

The approval follows a joint development project between the duo launched in February 2020.

KR said it has carried out the cargo hold fatigue analysis, the crack propagation analysis and gas leakage rate calculation and has verified the new LNG carrier’s compliance with of the IGC Code.

The classification society notes that firms install type B tanks mostly to large container ships or bulk carriers but Hyundai Mipo has developed the technology to apply it to small and medium-sized LNG carriers of 30,000 cbm capacity.

Moreover, KR sees a growing interest in small and medium-sized carriers in order to meet the recent increase in demand for LNG as fuel and the expansion of bunkering infrastructure.

To remind, Hyundai Mipo recently received approval for the same design from Lloyd’s Register.
