Venture Global reached a final investment decision (FID) on the $8.6 billion second phase of the CP2 LNG project on March 13.
CP2 will have a peak production capacity of 29 mtpa and has contracted to sell nearly all of its nameplate capacity on a long-term basis with customers predominantly located in Europe and Asia.
Venture Global previously said it expects to add approximately 13 mtpa of bolt-on capacity at both CP2 and its Plaquemines LNG plant, or approximately 6.4 mtpa at each.
However, Venture Global CEO Mike Sabel said last month that the company added four more liquefaction trains to the planned bolt-on expansion at its CP2 LNG project due to high demand.
In April 2026, Venture Global secured a pre-filing waiver from FERC for the third phase of its CP2 LNG project.
Venture Global’s units Venture Global CP2 LNG and Venture Global CP Express filed a formal application with FERC on May 26 requesting authorization to site, construct, own, operate, and maintain an expansion of CP2 LNG’s LNG export terminal and associated facilities.
The LNG terminal and pipeline expansions are related projects collectively referred to as the CP2 LNG expansion project.
According to Venture Global’s units, the proposed terminal expansion consists of six additional liquefaction blocks (just like those already approved), a new gas-fired power plant, and a third marine berth.
The expansion will increase the maximum peak liquefaction and export capacity of the CP2 LNG terminal by approximately 11.7 mtpa, equivalent to approximately 620.5 billion cubic feet per year (Bcf/yr), while the pipeline expansion will add approximately 1,900 million cubic feet per day of incremental firm transportation capacity.
CP Express estimates the total cost of its expansion project to be $825,971,448.
Venture Global’s units said they plan to start construction of the expansion project “soon after the receipt of Commission authorization and other necessary regulatory permits and approvals, and target commencing construction promptly thereafter.”
The two firms anticipate placing all the expansion project facilities in-service, after completing commissioning, approximately four years after Commission authorization.
To this end, Venture Global’s units request the Commission issue an order authorizing the CP2 LNG expansion project as proposed by the end of 2026.
