India’s Hindustan Zinc and GreenLine ink deal for more LNG-powered trucks

India’s Hindustan Zinc has signed a new deal with compatriot GreenLine to deploy more LNG-powered trucks built by Blue Energy Motors.

Hindustan Zinc, a Vedanta group company and India’s largest and only integrated producer of Zinc, said that the deal includes aditional 100 LNG-powered trucks and 100 electric trucks.

Back in 2023, the two firms joined forces on 180 LNG-powered trucks.

These moves are part of Hindustan Zinc’s efforts to reduce emissions from its operations, and help reach its target of net-zero emissions by 2050 or sooner.

“This large-scale transition will not only reduce logistics costs through discounted freight rates but is also projected to cut over 236 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions every month, equal to planting nearly 12,000 trees,” Hindustan Zinc claims.

With this deal, Hindustan Zinc will deploy a total of approximately 300 LNG and 100 EV trucks— one of India’s largest deployments of “green” heavy trucking, according to GreenLine.

Earlier this year, Essar Group’s GreenLine said it will invest $275 million in LNG-powered and electric trucks to boost decarbonization of the heavy-duty sector in India.

According to the firm, the funding will enable the deployment of over 10,000 LNG and EV trucks, along with the establishment of a nationwide network of 100 LNG refuelling stations, EV charging stations, and battery swapping facilities.

Blue Energy Motors builds GreenLine’s LNG-powered trucks.

In 2023, Blue Energy launched India’s 100th LNG-powered truck at its manufacturing facility in Pune.

FPT Industrial, a unit of Italian manufacturer Iveco, is supplying engines for the LNG-powered trucks as part of a deal the two firms signed in July 2022.
